2024-25 USHE Student Board Member Muskan Walia Sworn In

Muskan Walia, a senior honors student at the University of Utah majoring in mathematics and philosophy, was sworn in as the student representative for the Utah Board of Higher Education for the 2024-25 academic year during the August 30 Board meeting.

Student Board member Walia was selected by Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox to represent the students at Utah’s 16 public colleges and universities. She brings a wealth of experience in student leadership to this role. At the University of Utah, she has served as a presidential intern for the past two years and has been actively involved in student government for three years. These roles have given her valuable insights into the decision-making processes, governance and challenges faced by higher education in Utah.

“I am incredibly grateful and excited to represent my peers as the student Board member,” Walia said. “I will use this position to amplify student perspectives in decision-making processes and advocate for policies and initiatives that address the unique challenges we face. My intention is to enhance student experiences at all USHE institutions.”

Walia’s leadership journey has been shaped by mentorship from both university and student leaders, helping her develop a thoughtful and resolute approach to representing her peers. She has cultivated skills in building relationships, identifying problems and solutions and institutionalizing change—skills she is eager to bring to her role on the Board.

In previous years, the student Board member was required to be confirmed by the Utah Senate, but that is no longer a requirement. Student Board members serve for a one-year term. Walia will serve as the student Board member for the 2024-25 academic year.
