Applications are now open for those who wish to serve as the next Student Board Member for the Utah Board of Higher Education.
The Role of Student Board Member
The Utah Board of Higher Education is the governing board for the Utah System of Higher Education institutions. The Utah Legislature grants the Board the power to control, oversee, and regulate USHE. The Board’s major responsibilities include selecting and evaluating institutional presidents, implementing policies, reviewing programs and degrees, approving institutional missions, submitting a unified higher education budget request to the Governor and State Legislature, and other responsibilities as outlined in Utah Law.
The Utah Board of Higher Education is comprised of ten Utah residents, including one USHE student. All Board members are appointed by the Governor. The Student Board Member is appointed to a one-year term (beginning July 1).
The Student Board Member is responsible for engaging in the following activities, which equates to a commitment of approximately 80 hours over the course of the 12-month term (including travel time):
Prepare for and participate in all Board meetings
Facilitate listening sessions with students from USHE institutions
Engage in high school and college visits as needed
As institutional presidential vacancies occur, participate in interviewing and selecting institutional presidents
Eligibility to Apply: Resident of Utah
Utah Code 53B-1-404 requires that the Utah Board of Higher Education consists of members who are residents of the state of Utah.
The Student Board Member must be domiciled in Utah. In alignment with Board Policy R512, “domicile” is consistent with the general Utah law defining domicile and means that the Student Board Member has a fixed, permanent home in Utah, physically resides in that home during their term as the Student Board Member, and demonstrates intent to voluntarily reside permanently in Utah (not for a special or temporary purpose, such as solely living in Utah to acquire the in-state tuition rate with the intent to leave the state after college).
Only Utah residents are eligible to complete this application.
