USHE institutions encourage high school students to apply to college (part II)

The Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) is coordinating an expanded pilot of Utah College Application Week, to be held at 49 schools in 15 districts throughout Utah during Nov. 10 – 21, 2014. The purpose of College Application Week is to provide high school seniors in partner schools the opportunity to submit at least one viable college application during the school day. A special emphasis is placed on low-income and first-generation students.

Last week, we highlighted the efforts of the University of Utah, Dixie State University and Salt Lake Community College around Utah College Application Week. This week, we’ll focus on the outreach and programming of Utah Valley University and Weber State University during College Application Week:

Utah Valley University

UVU’s President Matthew Holland will speak at the official kick off assembly for College Application Week, to be held at Timpview High School on November 10 from 1:30 to 2:15 pm. The GreenMan Group, as well as cheer squad, will be in attendance.

The UVU Office of Admissions will provide staff or technical support to participating high schools. The Prospective Student Services Office will provide admissions counselors to participating high schools, and will help students through the admissions process by answering questions and providing assistance as students work on applications in a computer lab.
The UVU GEAR UP staff will be helping students at partner schools–in Provo, Nebo and Salt Lake School Districts, and Wasatch High School–fill out applications and assisting them in selecting a school that is the best match and fit.

Weber State University

President Chuck Wight will visit Ben Lomond High School on Friday, November 7 from 9:45 to 10:45am. He will speak at their kick off assembly about the importance of applying to and attending college. He will also participate in Ogden High School’s College Application Week activities on November 17 from 12:00 – 1:00pm, and will personally encourage students as they apply for colleges.

The Admissions Department at WSU, including admissions staff and student ambassadors, will support area schools’ efforts during College Application Week. WSU is also developing a brief training schools can use with volunteers about the application process and trouble-shooting any issues that come up. All of WSU’s Education Access & Outreach programs will be involved in College Application Week, including GEAR UP, TRiO Talent Search and Student 2 Student Advocates. WSU’s Education Access & Outreach staff and college student advocates and tutors will be assisting students during College Application Week at their school sites in Weber, Davis and Ogden districts.
