Brain Awareness Week

Forty students from the Weber State University Neuroscience program volunteered to spend their spring break discussing the brain with about 1,300 students in area elementary, middle and high schools.

During March 9-13, these students learned about the basic anatomy of the brain, including structures, functions, and interesting cases throughout history. Students also learned how drug use and brain injuries—from, say, not wearing a helmet—can negatively affect the brain. WSU students brought sheep brains to these classrooms for the students to dissect after the presentation.

Latinos in Action at Weber State University

On March 12, Weber State University hosted the Latinos in Action (LIA) conference for nearly 1,400 junior high and high school students. This is the third year Weber State University has hosted this conference. The theme of the conference was “Professional Me,” focusing on skills needed to be successful in the job market—resume writing, dress and interview prep. In addition to these workshops, students participated in leadership training and cultural activities, such as poetry, storytelling and dancing.

Students from 25 high schools and 22 middle schools from Salt Lake City to Utah’s northern border attended. Southern Utah University will host a LIA conference on March 18, and the University of Utah will host a LIA conference on March 27.

Latinos in Action is a year-round leadership course where students initiate and carry out youth activities and service projects. Participants receive leadership training and other skills that will help them to be college and career ready. LIA has chapters in 100 schools, primarily in Utah but also in Washington, Texas and Idaho.
