Campus Safety

Safety is an ongoing priority effort of USHE institutions and the Utah Board of Higher Education. Alongside federal statutes, including the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the Board adopted a student safety policy in 2015 to ensure consistent reporting and put resources towards best practices.

The Commissioner’s Office, at the direction of the Board, also created the USHE Campus Safety Task Force in 2025 to evaluate campus safety across Utah’s public colleges and universities and recommend systemwide policies and practices to enhance the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. Updates about and recommendations from the task force will be available here as they are developed.

USHE institutions have implemented extensive policies, programs, and partnerships to make USHE campuses safe. Utah law requires institutions to maintain campus safety plans, develop campus safety training curriculum, report crime statistics, and adopt and enforce policies to protect student-athletes from abusive coaching practices.

The University of Utah has also developed an annual Campus Safety Summit to foster professional development and the sharing of best practices Systemwide. If you are interested in learning more or participating in the summit,  you can find information on the University of Utah’s Department of Public Safety website.

Mental Health

Students across USHE have access to a variety of mental health resources and services through their campuses, including the following multi-institutional and systemwide resources:

Beyond crisis intervention, many USHE institutions offer comprehensive wellness programs—including Health & Wellness Centers, Peer Education initiatives, Recreation & Fitness facilities, and supportive campus communities. These services are designed to promote healthy lifestyles, build resilience and durable skills, and foster a sense of belonging. By engaging with these proactive resources, students can strengthen their academic, social, and personal well-being. Check with the institutions to learn more about the wellness programs and resources available to students.
