Credit by Examination for AP, CLEP, IB, and DSST

Academic Year 2024-25

These charts contain the minimum exam scores, course equivalencies, and postsecondary credits awarded for the eight degree-granting institutions in the Utah System of Education for:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) – exams developed by the College Board that validate college-level knowledge acquired during a year-long AP course taken by students in high school;
  • International Baccalaureate Programmes (IB) – exams developed by an internationally-based academic program that validate college-level knowledge acquired during a one or two year-long IB course taken by high school students;
  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP) – exams developed by the College Board to measure college-level knowledge acquired outside a classroom; and
  • Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) – exams traditionally offered to military personnel, now open to civilians, that test college-level knowledge acquired outside a classroom.

NOTE
: USHE exam equivalency tables list credit awarded for AP and IB courses currently taught at Utah high schools and AP, IB, and CLEP exams taken by Utah students. Other exams, if presented by students from other states, are evaluated for credit by institutions on an individual basis.

Utah Board of Higher Education Policy R472, and the Utah State Code 53B-16-105, require consistent credit be awarded, where possible, across USHE institutions. Consistent credit awards ensure seamless transfer of credit among USHE institutions.

USHE faculty major committees review subject exams provided by these four testing bodies and recommend credit to be awarded. Exams are revisited as needed when the exam authors edit content or when new exams are introduced. These charts are updated annually to reflect current awards. NOTE: USHE exam equivalency tables list credit awarded for exams taken by Utah students. Other exams, if presented by students from other states, are evaluated for credit by institutions on an individual basis.
