Tyler Shumway is a student at the University of Utah, where he studies Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations and expects to graduate in May 2027. He was one of 55 students nationwide selected as a 2026 Harry S. Truman Scholar, the nation’s top scholarship for students focused on public service and policy. He is also an Eccles Scholar and has served as a legislator in the University of Utah’s student government.
Tyler has spent two summers as a business analyst intern with Cicero Group, served as a legislative intern in the office of Congressman Blake Moore, and founded and operated a residential painting company. He later sold the company to serve a volunteer two-year Christian mission in Tanzania, where he became fluent in Swahili.
As the student member of the Utah Board of Higher Education, Tyler looks forward to representing students across Utah’s 16 public colleges, universities, and technical colleges. He is particularly interested in exploring ways the System can better support teaching and learning, strengthen alignment between higher education and the workforce, and keep student perspectives and success central to the Board’s work.
An avid endurance athlete, Tyler has completed 18 marathons, a half Ironman, and summited Mount Kilimanjaro.
