Rigorous statewide review ensures quality and workforce relevance.
Utah’s public colleges and universities are expanding offerings in fields that matter most to Utah’s economy, as reported to the Utah Board of Higher Education at its meeting today. Over the past five years, the Utah System of Higher Education has launched new degrees in health professions, engineering, computer sciences, biological sciences and education.
In total, Utah colleges introduced 178 programs and discontinued 190 programs over the past five years. Many of this year’s discontinuances reflect strategic reinvestments under House Bill 265 (2025), which directs institutions to reallocate resources toward high-impact programs that better meet student and workforce needs.
“Utah colleges are investing in programs that matter most for the state’s economy, helping students succeed and supporting industries that drive growth across Utah,” said Aaron Skonnard, Utah Board of Higher Education member. “Ongoing program review is one of the ways we ensure Utah’s colleges stay responsive and relevant, giving students access to the degrees and skills that truly make a difference.”
This year’s shift underscores a deliberate prioritization of resources toward areas of greatest impact for students and Utah’s economy.
All degree programs at Utah’s public colleges undergo rigorous performance reviews under Board Policy R401 and R411. These reviews ensure programs meet established standards of quality, align with institutional mission and role and serve workforce needs.
